Electric bicycles usually come with a two-year warranty, but do you plan to replace your bicycle in two years?

The chance is that in the first 5 years of ownership, you will experience at least once a problem with your motor. Replacement motors start €700 and can go upwards of €1500 for some units.

In contrast repairs usually cost between €100 - €300.

How can I protect my motor from damage?

Here are four tips to keep your e-bike in great shape and avoid costly repairs:

Tip 01.

Never wash an electric bicycle with a pressure hose. When cleaning the bicycle, spray the bicycle from the top down, from a distance. Don't point the hose directly towards the e-bike.

Tip 02.

When the wet season comes, fit the bicycle with mudguards (that actually protect the motor from the overspray of the front tire).

Tip 03.

If it is an eMTB, look into getting additional protection plates, like the ones from https://protect-emtb.com/ for example.

Tip 04.

Regularly check your drivetrain for noises and play. If you sense that the noise from the drive unit has changed, get it to your local bicycle shop, or consult our blog on the most common issues with e-bikes.

What are the common problems with electic bicycle motors?

Most motors feature complicated electronics with self diagnosing software, so they will get alerts for lots of things. Mechanical issues aren’t so easy to detect however, so you should mainly rely on your hearing to detect problems with your motor. If it starts making a different noise, most probably some of your bearings, or gears have started wearing out.

Which are the most reliable electric bicycle motors?

We can say that all brands actually make a pretty reliable product. Some people report running over 30,000 kilometers on a motor, and once opened, their motors need nothing but a clean and regrease. There are issues with particular series, but these issues are generally resolved during the warranty period.

It must be noted, that of all the popular major electric bicycle motor manufacturers, Bosch and Bafang are the easiest to service, due to the availability of spare parts.

For some motor series, the lack of spare parts is so severe, that we have had to buy new motors and part them out for spares!

Is it OK to run the motor with noisy bearings?

The short answer is - No. Once bearings develop noise, this means there is dirt inside them and there will soon be play in the bearings and axles. This play means that the seals will gradually allow more water and dirt to enter. It is a self-accelerating process, and you should stop it the earliest you detect it, to avoid excessive damage to the internals of your motor.

e-bike motors are a complicated mechanism, containing an electric motor, electronics, gearing, sensors, your bottom bracket axle and sometimes belt drives in a tight space. If water gets inside this confined place the damage can be very excessive.

So far, we can say that we are able to save around 80% of the motors we receive, but unfortunately, sometimes the damage is beyond repairable.
